That Time We Ran Away to Adukrom

Ever since I can remember I have always been curious and enticed by the silhouette of the distant mountains whenever my family visited my grandparents at Taifa, a community in Accra.

We lived at Dansoman at the time, so for 10 year old me and my younger brother, a drive from Dansoman to Taifa was a whole adventure.  Those were such simple times where I always wondered to myself," Ah, what world lies beyond those distant mountains at all?".

So fast forward, it's sometime in late July 2018, on a Friday night after work.  A couple of friends and I are having some drinks when one of the guys just pipes up and suggests an idea (all in pidgin obviously),

"Chale you no see say we always just dey link for Accra?" He says.

"Mesef I taya Accra chilling, make we go someplace else errhh," another friend chips in.

A third friend then suggests he has a pal from his college days that is based in a little town called Adukrom somewhere in the Akuapem mountainside. And that night we made the decision to leave Accra early Saturday morning and go see this "Nice" place my guy was talking about.

The drive to the location was rather uneventful (we used a regular trotro to get there) yet I marveled at the tranquility of the countryside. I always wonder to myself, "What kind of creatures reside there?” of “How old are some of the thick tall trees I see?”. All of these I keep to myself. My silent musings, if you will.

We finally get there (under 2.5hours) and turns out our host is the grandson of the Queen Mother of the town, so our accommodation was sorted out nicely. Right from the moment we got there we were itching to explore. Our host then suggested we go to the nearest waterfall scenery close to the town and check it out. The name of the place was called Asenema falls.

Asenema falls is a rather low-key tourist attraction hidden in the Akuapem hills rainforest north of Aburi, that had very little human presence when we got there.  We encountered the groundskeeper & his son tending to his little farm on the grounds. True to our host's suggestion, the falls was a really quiet and serene place. A place for quiet reflection, even though at some point it felt like there were silent eyes observing us, as we waded in the pool and took pictures(my wild imagination going off, I guess).

Someone should have told me the nights at Adukrom were chilly-- I mean not winter cold-- but at 20°c, this was cold, very cold for typical GH guys like us. All the guys had on hoodies. I was the only one dumb enough not to carry one, so yeah it was a chilly night indeed (the drinks warmed me up a bit).

Adukrom was one of those trips where I truly enjoyed every bit of it. From the excursions to Asenema falls to the night time revelry in the central part of town, we made good friends and long-time connections during our time there.

P.S: I ended up going there three more times. Lol
